March 22: World Water Day/Support AfD's Defending Water for Life Campaign

Corporations treat water as a commodity to be sold at whatever price they can ring out of the market. The Alliance is part of an international movement that says water is a fundamental right for people and nature. World Water Day is a great time to bring this issue to your chapter and your community.

Show the PBS documentary Thirst. This hour-long documentary is an excellent introduction to the issues and comes with a study guide written by Ruth Caplan and published by the Sierra Club. For more information and the study guide, go to www.thirstthemovie.org. You can order the VHS or DVD by calling Bullfrog Films at 800-543-3764. Be sure to mention that you are part of the Alliance and showing it for community education to get the cheapest price.

Then plan a reading and discussion of the new book: Thirst: Fighting the Corporate Theft of Our Water. Written by Thirst producers Deborah Kaufman and Alan Snitow, with Michael Fox, the book is being released in early March, just in time for World Water Day. Order through your local independent book store!

The book includes stories about Lee and Holyoke MA where the Alliance helped to organize, and about citizens fighting Nestle in Mecosta County MI with whom the Alliance networks. Read these stories and then get in touch with the Alliance's Defending Water for Life campaign about becoming part of the campaign. The next few years are critical, if we are to keep water in public hands in this country.
The authors will also be doing book tours. Click here for information on a reading tour in your area and think about inviting them to your town.
For more resources that you can use in local organizing, go to AfD's Defending Water for Life page at our website.
